The mission of the foundation is to improve, promote, sponsor and enhance
the educational experiences for public school students.
Public education foundations serve as a conduit between schools and communities. Funding projects that
fall outside the scope of the schools operating budgets, the Portsmouth Public Education Foundation grants
have supported classroom teachers since 2002. From 2002 through 2011, the foundation has awarded 149 grants
totaling over $83,952.00 (not including the Teacher of the Year grant awards). Those grants have directly
impacted thousands of Portsmouth public school students, parents and community members. The foundation is
an independent not-for-profit organization which operates outside the school department.
The foundation is governed by a volunteer board of directors.
