Portsmouth Public Education Foundation Awards 23 Grants

The Portsmouth Public Education Foundation (PPEF) awarded an unprecedented twenty-three Educational Excellence Grants at the Public School Orientation Meeting held on Monday, August 27, 2007. Mr. Humphrey, President of PPEF, was on hand to deliver the checks to the teachers and to recognize all of Portsmouth Public School teachers, many who go beyond their regular curriculum, to provide a unique and innovative learning experience to their students.
The total amount awarded for this school season was $14,035. This is a huge jump from last year when fourteen Educational Excellence Grants were awarded totaling $6,600.00. And since PPEF’s inception in 2001, PPEF has increased the maximum amount the teachers can apply for from $500.00 to $750.00 a grant, giving teachers more to fund their student projects.
Along with PPEF’s primary fundraising event, the Lance Cpl. Barton J. Carroll Memorial 5K Road Race which is held during Armed Forces Weekend, PPEF introduced two new other events this year which has helped in increasing the funds for the grants. The first Hidden Kitchens of Portsmouth Tour, which was held in early May, was a great success showcasing seven homes here in Portsmouth and will be repeated next year.
The second event is PPEF’s First Annual Golf Tournament, which will be held on Saturday, September 15, at Jamestown Golf Course in Jamestown. Openings for golfers and tee sponsors are still available. Contact for this event is Ms. Ellen Toner at 401- 619-0934.
PPEF will also be holding its annual Fall Social on Thursday, October 11 to showcase the works of last year Educational Excellence Grants recipients.
