2008 Fall Showcase

Oct 27, 2008

On October 23, 2008, the Portsmouth Public Education Foundation held its sixth annual Fall Showcase of Teacher Educational Excellence Grant awards from the 2007-2008 school years at Green Valley Country Club. Twenty-three grants were awarded to twenty-eight teachers last year and the room was packed with displays of their talented projects and products produced in their classrooms with the funds received from the grants. The event was well attended with members from the school community, local legislators including Senator Charles J. Levesque and Representative Amy G. Rice along with supporters of public education. PPEF President Helen Furriel congratulated all the teachers who were awarded grants then surprised six teachers with additional grants. These teachers are Kathleen Beebe (PHS), Erin Escher (PMS), Pam Hamilton (Hathaway), Maryanne Reeber (Hathaway), Megan Sullivan (PHS), Susan Corseri (Melville), AnneFay Sullivan (PHS), Karen Jeong (PHS), and Joanne Quinn (PHS). After the grant recognition, Helen Furriel presented a plaque to Ms. Valerie Seveney, an Elmhurst School teacher, for the first PPEF “Teacher of the Year” award. Ms. Seveney received a $1000 unrestricted grant in appreciation of her efforts and PPEF hopes to acknowledge an educator each year going forward. Since 2001 the foundation has awarded 97 grants totaling over $47,500.

The projects on display were from all five schools in Portsmouth. Some topics on exhibit included “Hooked on Hydroponics” by Lisa Phaneuf and Erica Magilton from Elmhurst School; “Magnets, Weather & Rocks – Oh My!” by Denise Warner from Hathaway School; “Local History Tour” Sue Small from Melville School; “Making Positive Decisions” by Lesly Choinski from Portsmouth Middle School; and “Self-Portraits: A Day in the Life of a Teenager” by Rose Escobar from Portsmouth High School.

PPEF would also like to thank the following businesses and individuals who contributed to the Silent Auction. Your generosity made this another successful event! Thank you!
